Sanguis Humanitatis
Ask any American what the greatest social problem we face is: Such a query
will invariably generate a storm of answers, most contradictory to each other,
some in agreement. Some Americans will cite Gay-Marriage, others autism.
Some will cite taxes, others, gas prices. Certainly, these are legitimate,
pressing concerns. But what if there existed a social crisis which, if left
unchecked, would render the future of the others hopeless? Indeed, such an
issue does exist; an issue caused by several factors – our schools, our
literature, and our culture. That omnipresent issue, that ultimate social
problem, is education.
First in this essay, but perhaps not in vitality, are our schools.
Inside those immense institutions, those monolithic edifices which dot the
landscape of our everyday lives, is a disease which festers and languishes
unaided, a malady which is currently killing the minds of our youngsters.
Inside our well-funded schools, children are no longer taught to think, a
virus passed down to them by their teachers. No, instead they are taught such
trivia as the circumference of the sun, or the dates of the Reformation.
Instead of memorizing the Reformation’s dates, children should learn to
wonder at its cause; and, after wondering, to discuss, to examine—to think!
Sadly, our government pours money into these peculiar institutions, called
schools, which are merely brainwashing our youth, filling their minds with
dates, facts and statistics, rather than knowledge. Classical educations,
those pioneered by the Ancients, are nonexistent. And that nonexistence
contributes heavily to the social problem of education.
Yet another dilemma exists which contributes to the detriment of our
children’s education: our literature. For our literature waxes “crummier” by
the day. Indeed, this presents a small problem: How are youngsters supposed
to learn, when all available to them is trash like Harry Potter?
Analogically, how is man to slake his thirst, when all that presents itself
is Code Red Mountain Dew? Harry Potter is “fun;” Mountain Dew is “yummy.”
But in order to survive, man must read thoughtful literature, must quench his
thirst with pure water! Children today, who enter a library, find themselves
faced with a choice: On the one hand, they find shelves upon shelves of
gleaming, glistening videos and DVDs; on the other, rather shabby-looking,
nondescript tomes, bearing alien titles such as David Copperfield, or Little
Women. The choice is simple. Out they march with four or five DVDs in their
bags. We should be outraged: Libraries should be sources of good literature!
Faced with such attractive alternatives as Harry Potter or Star Wars,
youngsters may never meet good ol’ Huckleberry Finn, may never have a chance
to experience education in the form of quality literature.
Finally, enter modern culture—dressed in fashion colors, blasting rock
‘n roll, and spelling doom to true education. In the eyes of this gaudy pop
culture, it’s not “cool” to love reading. It’s not “cool” to ask “why?” It’s
not “cool” to be smart. In schools, in malls, on TV, children are bombarded
with American culture’s trendy dogma. In the last of these especially,
youngsters find an addicting alternative to learning and reading. When asked,
the young generation will readily identify Paris Hilton—but may fail to recall
the name of our President. Rather than actively seeking knowledge and
understanding, they passively allow movie stars and fashion models to consume
their thoughts and minds. Our modern pop culture, more than our schools, more
than our literature, poses a neon, high-definition threat to education.
But all three of the above causes severely threaten our children’s
education. How will youths learn to love learning, when forced to memorize
lists of dates, places and facts? How will they meet such edifying and
enriching friends as Natasha Rostov, when solicited by others such as
Garfield? And how will our young generation improve their minds, watching the
scandals and exploits of vapid rock stars? In the end, the fate of our
children, of our country—of true, pure education, lies in the hands of
parents. Parents must step up to the plate, and encourage their children to
think, to question, to learn. If they don’t, who in the future generation
will overturn Roe v. Wade, will brilliantly solve the energy crisis, will lead
our country? If parents don’t, then the blood in the veins of our
civilization will falter, dry up, and disappear. For integera curiositas
ingeniosa sanguis humanitatis verae est: Disinterested intellectual curiosity
is the lifeblood of true civilization.

Environmentalism: The Downfall of America
Intro
Every power that exists has struggles. Some struggles overwhelm and defeat the power, while others merely hinder it, but all damage the power to some extent. Our society has many struggles and government many difficulties, both which mar our country. Some cost money, others cost freedom, some are problems that are never faced and fixed. The most pressing problem confronting the United States is that environmentalists have so much influence and control that they can institute regulations to further their cause with total disregard for the overall impact on society.
Paragraph 1
The first problem that environmentalists pose is they have put the entire agricultural industry at risk. The environmentalists are dedicated to protecting creatures with little regard to the risk or cost. One specific creature and instance is the delta smelt, which lives in the San Francisco Bay and certain rivers. Since most farmers depend on water there, they are in jeopardy because this fish species is “endangered” and in order to protect it, water is being withheld from the farmers. Not only farmers are in danger, but also the entire population, both being dependent on water and food the farmers grow. Because of recent draughts in many parts of the country, every farmer is at risk because of the selfish environmentalists. Increasing environmental power is ruining our food supply and hindering our freedom.
Paragraph 2
Another problem our country is facing that could be fixed with withdrawal of environmental power is the oil supply. As everyone knows, oil has reached a high and while everyone is disturbed, the environmentalists remain stubborn. Plenty of oil is in our country and off our coastline, but the environmentalists won’t allow drilling. The lower the oil prices the better our economy, because oil influences most industries. While oil remains underground our country remains at risk. Since most of our oil is imported, the withdrawal of any major foreign producer could cripple America and make us vulnerable to any country willing to strike. Thus, environmental power has hurt our country and could eventually be her downfall.
Paragraph 3
Lastly, the environmentalist hurt our society by making laws which cost buyers and the government precious dollars. The environmental groups set their goals based on their interests and selfishly don’t consider the people around them. One instance where environmentalists cost the government thousands is on construction. The ecological activists have so much power they can stop or reroute any construction project that they think might harm, some miniscule creature. While environmentalists carry out their desires, the U.S. taxpayers are paying for their personal interests’ which is hurting the United States of America. Every law the environmentalists make, more pressure is exerted on the industry it affects and more money is used to fulfill that law. Essentially, every law they make, the price of the item it affects will rise while the law isn’t fulfilling any goal other than some activist’s selfish scheme. As a law is made, the price goes up and the entire country is affected for the worse.
Conclusion
The most pressing problem confronting the United States is that environmentalists have so much influence and control; they can institute regulations to further their cause with total disregard for the overall impact on society. This problem, if not faced, could cost America her pride, in freedom, and in power. As many problems persist, life in the United States is not what is was or should be. Concluding, our freedom is starting to slip out of our grasp, and could be lost if we let such forces influence America so greatly.
America today is in a crisis. Cracks are beginning to appear in the pillars of the most powerful nation on earth, and they are being widened not by enemies, but by its own people. More and more states are legalizing homosexuality, abortion runs rampant, and a woman is running successfully for vice-president with the choices for president only mediocre to terrible. But despite these, the most pressing issue facing America today is .
Abortion only focuses on self. It is the exact opposite of laying down one's life for his friend; the baby is being aborted so the mother can continue her own life and goals interrupted. It goes absolutely against the whole duty of a woman laid out in the bible; to be a wife and mother. A woman who has an abortion cares virtually for no one but herself; she will even kill to keep everything out her way as she pursues a course that is selfish innate of itself. Abortion only eggs on, and perhaps is even a basis of, the "me mentality" so rampant in our culture.
The whole basis of abortion are the inseparable beliefs of evolution and atheism. Should not the "weakest" creatures be weeded out? Life is not important; after all, we are only fish, monkeys, and blobs of matter in the end. Abortion is atheistic because it leaves out any thought of God. Not only in breaking His commandments through murdering, but with their argument that the baby is not alive when it is aborted they imply that God did not breathe life into the baby, it merely came about. This is evolution and atheism. Evolution is everything anti-biblical, and abortion only supports this atheistic view of life.
Abortion is pure murder of the first degree, but somehow society today accepts it as a normal practice. America calls itself an advanced, civilized society; this practice is no different from the headhunters of Africa. If murder is acceptable, then what is unacceptable? In the light of killing human beings, how wrong is homosexuality to the non-believer? Abortion blurs the line of right and wrong to the extent that America is drifting over that line with hardly anyone noticing. Although the baby has never talked or walked, he is definitely alive, and abortion is definitely murder. If this sin of sins can be rationalized, what is next?
Abortion is the axe hammering away at magnificent oak called the United States. Abortion is selfish, evolutionistic and atheistic. But even worse, it is murderous. The downfall of America could hinge on this terrible issue. Abortion is murder. It is the one of the most anti-biblical problems with our culture today. The christian who does not fight it merely aids it.

Our Canadian society has never been firmly based on Christian
principles, but recently it has departed even more from them. As a
country, we have been moving farther and farther away from God, and
turning to man. One example of this is the socialistic way the country
is going. The people are looking to the government as the savior, and
expecting it to provide everything for them, instead of looking to God.
Some of the ways Canada is moving towards socialism are its medicare
system, the way the government bails businesses out, and its welfare
system.
Firstly, the government gives medicare to all Canadian citizens, but
people always want more and more to be covered by the government,
instead of paying for it themselves. They want the government to take
care of them and all their health needs, but they still complain about
the taxes they have to pay to support the system. If everyone would pay
for their own healthcare, and thus pay less taxes, they could get better
healthcare. This way, everyone's money wouldn't be pooled together to
give equally poor healthcare to each person!
The second way Canada's society is becoming more socialist is with
businesses running out of money and then the government bailing them
out. For example, a lot of the jobs that used to be in the auto industry
have gone to China and India, where labor is cheaper. Thus, American
automakers have had to close down some of their plants and lay off
workers. When Ford decided it had to close down its auto plant in
Windsor, the government stepped in and contributed a large sum of money
so that Ford could keep the plant running and save the jobs. This is
unproductive, because it doesn't really help Ford's situation of running
out of work – it just saves local peoples' jobs. The cycle will probably
just repeat itself as soon as the money from the government runs out
Finally, one of the worst ways the government is becoming socialistic is
in its welfare system. If people are too lazy to work, they can get
money from the government. This is not fair to those who do work,
because money that they worked hard to earn has to go to taxes, some of
which goes to these people - some of which really can't get a job, but a
lot of which just don't want to bother. It has traces of the communist
system, where wealth is distributed from the rich to the poor to make
everyone equal. This is not a good system – it gives the government more
and more control in everyone's lives. Eventually, the government may
have much more control in the lives of the people, and if the government
is godless, it would be disastrous.
In conclusion, we can see how Canadian society is becoming more
socialistic, and looking to the government to help them out when in
need, instead of to God. No one knows what the future will hold, but
there is the possibility that Canada may become even more socialistic
and government controlled than it is now. As God's kingdom spreads,
though, there will be hopefully be more people to help turn the
government in a right direction.
Our Great Immodesty
Many in our culture view modesty as optional, and often when the option of modesty is chosen, that person is ridiculed for her chastity. We have become numb to immodesty and vulgarity in clothing. In the Victorian days, a 16 year old that wore a skirt higher than her ankles was considered shocking. Though this is not to defend the philosophical beliefs of the Victorians, it is in great contrast to the lax “modern” standards of our age. This essay will briefly investigate the root problem of our culture’s great immodesty, its ever-changing standards, and the Bible’s instruction on modesty.
So many things in our culture could be solved if our standards of purity were higher. We act impurely so we dress impurely. Our standards of holiness couldn’t be lower. “This kind of immodest dress is going to attract fools, and that will breed fools.” [Douglass, Wilson] In the grocery check out line, prudent Christians must cast their eyes down from seeing the exposed women on the magazines’ covers. It is not only the pagans that are dressing this way, but a large majority of Christians! The face of Christ’s church looks no different than that of the world. We are to be set apart, and beacons of Christ’s truth. Though, we should not follow the extreme teachings that ‘if the world is wearing one color we wear the other’. A Christian woman can be stylish, and still set apart by her modesty.
In some ways, mainstream America is encouraging women more than ever to dress in an immodest fashion. Hollywood agrees and wholeheartedly promotes it. It is seen as the norm. Degrees of modesty have been erratically inconsistent throughout history, especially in the 20th century. Beginning in Victorian times, modesty was seen as extremely important. You were practically disgraced if you did not cover yourself completely. The extremes of the Victorians shot way down in the 1920’s, when women began to be bare and daring with their dress, and all standards of holiness were completely disregarded. Modesty became more important in the 40’s and up through the late 50’s. Though, all progress that was made was completely lost in the hippy movement of the 60’s and 70’s. Things have improved but a little from the 80’s to the present day.
1 Timothy 2:9-10 says, “Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness with good works.” Here Paul is giving us clear instruction on the way that daughters of the King should adorn themselves. We should not be flamboyant, showy, or revealing, acting our status (wives, daughters, and foremost Christian women). Proverbs 31: 30-31 says, “Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.”
As Christians, we should strive to follow the example that the Bible gives us, and not be drawn away with the ever-changing standards of the world. They are sinking sand, and are not put on a firm foundation. The Bible’s standards never change, and are the only wisdom we can completely put our trust in.

Apathy- America’s Invisible Threat
“So much attention is paid to the aggressive sins, such as violence and cruelty and greed with all their tragic effects, that too little attention is paid to the passive sins, such as apathy and laziness, which in the long run can have a more devastating effect”. These insightful words of Eleanor Roosevelt aptly expose one of the hidden threats facing America. Because of the less obvious nature of apathy its true destructive qualities are not always recognized, though they are indeed dangerous. Apathy is not only detrimental to one’s self but also creates an access for evil. America today is faced with a selectively apathetic population, which by turn poses a danger to the individual and affects the nation as a whole.
According to the American Heritage Stedman's Medical Dictionary, apathy is “Lack of interest, concern, or emotion; indifference”. The root of apathy may be attributed to any one or more of three basic standings: unwillingness to extend effort when there is no perception of personal gain; unwillingness to become involved when there is no perception of personal involvement (classically known as “its not my problem”); or despair that even if one was to care or be involved it would change nothing. How could anyone be truly a part of their family or society if they are in this state?
At some point apathy extends beyond the passive; though one might have thought he was merely declining to lift a hand or become involved, at some point that indifference infers acceptance and soon there is Saul, holding the cloaks of murdering men. It has been said, “Apathy is the glove in which evil slips it’s hand” (Bodie Thoene). Such an evil may creep either into the apathetic person with all the sneaking subtleties of Satan or it may happen that by being apathetic the person has allowed another, a malignant one, to push them aside and usurp the space previously so carefully held in excessive neutrality.
Long ago Plato warned, “The price of apathy towards public affairs is to be ruled by evil men”. America has the unique quality of being a democratic republic, not a mere mob rule nor a dictatorship but a government grounded in the roots of the people. However, in the 2004 presidential election only 55.3 % of registered voters actually voted. When the people do not avail themselves to the opportunity to take part in the direction of their country that opportunity will dissipate and fade away. It is the people’s selective apathy, rather than a willingness to be intellectually involved in the state of our country, that will bring about the erosion of that precious ideal which America claims: Freedom
Galatians 6:9 instructs “Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.” Rather than allowing disinterest to overwhelm life, rather than allowing apathy to shape a place for evil, rather than standing by in chosen lethargy while all falls to ruin, awake! Breathe; let passion turn to just action. Live your life. Let not your life be hollow. Vote. Be involved. We are called to action, not indifference.

Ever since same-sex marriage became a law in California it has become one of the most pressing issues in our society. May 15th, 2008, the California Supreme Court overturned the voters’ 61 percent majority in favor of affirming marriage as the union between one man and one woman. Their decision did not expand marriage but altered the core meaning. The redefining of marriage reduces the institution from its original purpose, to a meaningless piece of paper. Changing the definition of marriage has vast cultural consequences and if it had not been done there would have been many social benefits but because it is legal there must be a way to protect marriage in other states.
Same-sex marriage has had vast cultural consequences on people all over the United States. When Massachusetts Supreme Court passed a law similar to California’s same-sex marriage law their decision affected a catholic adoption business because they objected to placing children with same-sex couples. Because the California court changed the legal norm to make same-sex marriage a fundamental right it is now illegal to treat same-sex marriage differently from traditional marriage. This has changed daily life from many angles. People all over the United States have felt the consequences due to same-sex marriage.
There would’ve been many social benefits if same-sex marriage had not been redefined. According to a Heritage Foundation Center for Data Analysis Report, “child poverty would have been nearly a third lower today if the traditional two-parent family had not been deteriorated over the past three decades”. Also according to a 1994 Justice Department report, marriage reduces the risk that both men and women will become victims of violence. In Japan and European countries many people choose to be single or have childless marriages which means the elderly have too few young people working to support them. If marriage had not been redefined there would have been many social benefits.
The institution of traditional marriage can be protected through actions taken in the area of public education. Although the debate is now a national issue it will occur at state level because marriage is recognized and regulated by state law. Concerned efforts must be made to educate the public, policymakers and political leaders about the threats to the institution of marriage. While the majority is in favor of traditional marriage, confusion about what to do creates strong and consistent, moral and political leadership. Three points are important to this issue. The first theme is that a clear and compelling case must be made to educate people about the nature and societal importance of marriage. Also that marriage is a unique relationship between a man and a woman, which should be defended on the basis of studies provided by social science. The third and most important point is that a strong case must be made because the redefining of marriage undermines the institution, destroys the case for promoting an ideal of marriage and threatens religious liberty. Public education is a great place to start when trying to protect traditional marriage.
Changing the definition of marriage has had vast cultural consequences and if it had not been changed there would have been many social benefits but because it is legal there must be a way to prevent it in other states. Although California already had a law defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman the state Supreme Court brushed it aside saying that the law violated the state constitution. Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania spoke at the Heritage foundation about the “necessity of marriage’. He acknowledged the institution of marriage faces problems like divorce “but that doesn’t mean we should weaken it further” by redefining marriage to accommodate same-sex relationships, it means instead that we need to start promoting the “right way” to do marriage.

What is the most pressing problem in our society? The idea that we should be tolerant of all beliefs, religion and life styles is the most serious problem in our society. If this is the most serious problem our society faces the first thing to be done is to define the word. The word tolerant is defined in the Webster’s Dictionary as “inclined or disposed to tolerate; showing tolerance; forbearing: tolerant of errors.” As this is not a useful definition for the sake of this paper we shall use the definition “showing respect for the rights or opinions or practices of others.” The reason this is a problem is that we (our society) have taken this too far. We accept almost anything because we have been programmed to be polite and not step on anyone’s feeling.
The belief that we should be tolerant of all life styles is especially prevalent in our society. California has a box with seven different sexes on the Drivers License application. The Bill for same sex marriage is brought repeatedly to every state to see if they will pass it. All these things are bombarding us and Christians are told by the media to tolerate it and not to be judgmental.
The next thing we are faced with is false religion. Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in America today. Wicca and Judaism are also quickly rising in growth. In fact in America Christianity is one of the most declining religions. They say Christians in America pray for the persecution to end in China while Christians in China pray for persecution in America. China has visible persecution while America has a persecution of the mind. Whenever a Christian stands up for their faith he is immediately told to sit down a shut up and no one cares.
Finally we are told to tolerate beliefs. The difference between beliefs and religion is that beliefs are a breaking or difference in theology in two sects of the same religion. The Way is a religion, Baptists and Presbyterians are belief systems. The Christian faith has more divisions than any other religion. As the great poet Aesop said, “United we stand, divided we fall.” This cliché may be old but it is one of the truest statements in history. In America we falling down, fifty churches close every day never to be opened again, this is a dark time when the most openly Christian country in the world is losing its faith and no one is concerned.
“A house divided cannot stand,” these great words of Christ are falling on a deaf and ‘tolerant’ nation. The idea of tolerance is everywhere and the problem is Christians are buying it. We tolerate gay marriage. We tolerate false religion. We tolerate division of the church. We tolerate it all. The End Days are coming and we don’t care, we don’t want to disturb the waters. In fifty years the Christian faith in America will be dead all because we were tolerant.

Planet Earth, undoubtedly the best place to vacation in our solar system because of its moderate temperatures and beautiful weather. Although all seems well enough, there are some people who believe that the average temperature of the planet is increasing in what they call “global warming”. In the U.S. this idea has especially taken root in the minds of some politicians and scientist. Slowly increasing in number these believers claim that unless something drastic is done the Earth is racing toward some catastrophic climate change. But there are multiple problems with this so called “global warming” beginning with the scientist who support it and the evidence that contradicts this hypothesis. Another aspect often overlooked is the strain it would put on the economy if the U.S. were to take action to stop this potentially nonexistent problem.
Part of the problem with this global warming hype lies within the motives of the scientist themselves. Although it may not make sense for people like this to just make things up, there is a reason. It provides funding. Without funding many scientist's careers would fail miserably, but if they say that there is some impending doom or that the world is about to end many governments will willingly pump money into the projects of these men. Unfortunately this method has permeated many scientific groups including NASA. Thus one can see the motivation of many scientist to advocate global warming.
Although the reasons for the scientist support of global warming may be debated there are certain fact which cannot be denied. Unsurprisingly there have been no long term studies that bolster the case of global warming, all the scientist's cataclysmic predictions are based on computer models which can easily be manipulated to achieve a desired result. For the past 23 years satellites have monitored the temperature in the lower troposphere and no warming has been detected. Producing only about 3% of the CO2 emitted by natural process on Earth, humans do not put out enough carbon dioxide to affect the climate in such an extreme way. These facts which vehemently oppose global warming have yet to be explained by those who back it.
Taking drastic measures to decrease carbon emissions in the U.S. would prove costly. Presently the amount of carbon dioxide released by the U.S. is already 7% below what it was in the 1990's. Unfortunately many state governments are still recklessly pumping money into programs to reduce greenhouse gases which only serve to add to a projected $90 billion dollar deficit. If bills and regulations to reduce CO2 emission continue to be passed this will most likely lead to higher taxes for instituting these changes and reduced productivity of many businesses. With the costs to fix global warming set so high there is one question that many people are asking. Is it worth it?
Henry Shaw once said, “Caution, though very often wasted is a good risk to take.” With all the media hype surrounding global warming it is easy to swept along with the crowd but one should step back and examine the other possibilities. The case against global warming is strong when you take into consideration the reasons of the scientist and the facts that contradict it. On top of that, the financial costs of efforts to stop global warming must be examined as well . Obviously it would not be wise to totally rule out its possibility but it would be utterly foolish to just go along with it.

The worst social problem facing our culture at this time is the amount of young people who are ignorant about political matters, especially matters like the war in Iraq and the issue of abortion. Because of their ignorance, they make assumptions and decisions that could be dangerous in years to come. Young people are the next generation of voters, politicians, and writers that will shape our country's future with the decisions they make. If they are unaware now about their country's issues, they will be uninformed in the years to come when their influence is called upon. This is an urgent issue in our society today that must be remedied.
As a teenager, I have first-hand experience in this ignorance. I see it not only in myself, but in many of my peers. An avid reader, I frequentlyfind myself at the library, consorting with other people my age. In our conversations and shared Internet browsing, the upcoming election sometimes slips into our topic of conversation. I have been dismayed to find that almost all my acquaintances there are passionate Bush haters, but with no reason to support this hate. When I ask why they dislike Bush so much, the most common reply is "Because the war is stupid and pointless!" However, when pressed to give further examples, they are unable to defend their position with any sort of clarity.
This ignorance is born of a lack of caring and the influence of their peers. My generation is more concerned about what they are going to wear to school the next day than who will be our next president. Why should they care? It's not their problem. Politics belong to the grown-ups to deal with. If none of their friends care about the next presidential election, why should they bother? What they do not realize, and are not informed, is that soon the decisions that have to be made will be theirs. Because they have not been prepared to deal with those issues, their decision-making abilities will be severely compromised.
Another dangerous fault of young people is that most of them automatically agree with whatever their parents think, and what they see and hear from the media. If their parents are Democrats, the children themselves automatically assume they are Democrats as well. They do not take the time to think for themselves and decide what they really believe. Parents do not often press their children to think and act independently, and as a result children grow up with the same world view as whoever brought them up. They do not realize that they can think; make their own decisions about the world. Media is also a huge influence. This generation is constantly plugged into all things electronic, and since most of the news is both distinctly and discreetly liberal, young people unconsciously develop liberally skewed world views. Instead of developing their own world view, they absorb what is around them and unconsciously develop a world view that is not truly their own.
In conclusion, ignorance of young people today is an imminently serious problem. This generation is the future, and the future will be in jeopardy if something is not done toremedy this carelessness. Perhaps the change will have to start with the young people themselves. We need to realize our place in the world, and take steps to insure our decisions and places in the oncoming years will be purely out of our own intelligent thought and design. If we do not rise up out of our ignorance, our future will be a bleak place.

Our Society's Shame
As Americans we face a horde of problems today brought on by our lack of spiritual vigilance. In 1621, our forefathers, a pious and persecuted minority in a church under secular rule, sailed for a new world where they could worship the Lord in spirit and truth. Sensing divine providence in their mission, they braved stormy seas only to face hunger, depravation, and death in a strange land. They endured all aware of their calling as "a city set upon a hill," a light to the spiritually dead European world. The Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay Colonies became centers of worship, evangelism, and theological training, and their governments were firmly founded on the Word of God. Ironically, instead of giving light, we soon became "enlightened" by Europe, and our calling as light-bearers was forgotten as the shadows of secularism drifted across the ocean. The humanism, modernism, and post-modernism of the 19th and 20th centuries became not only accepted in our former seminaries, but fashionable, and solidified our rationale for sin. We have taken prosperity from the hands of God and then turned to deny His existence with our deeds. The exultation of man is no trivial pursuit in America today, and abortion is the outstanding evidence of our culture's arrogance.
Abortion is a gross violation of what our founding fathers sensed as America's sacred call as light bearers to the world. As a society, we violate all Ten Commandments with little culpability, yet the blatant breach of the sixth commandment sanctioned by the government in 1973 echoes as the death knell of our society. Attentively, the world has watched as we have murdered millions of our children over the last thirty-five years. Pro-choice advocates in the infamous Supreme Court trial Roe v. Wade argued that the fetus was not human and therefore had no protection under our Constitution, an argument which has been shattered by new understandings of the continuum of life from conception to birth. Undaunted stand abortion's advocates. Unmasking the egoism and conceit of our nation, the choice of mere man now takes precedence over the sovereign right of Creator. Is it not for the sake of convenience and concealment of sin that children in our nation are aborted daily? Called to give light to the world, we now prefer the night to cover our sin.
From America's inception, her shores have been a harbor and refuge to the outcast, yet our society has become the very oppressor many have fled. Guaranteeing the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, our Constitution beckons the weak and weary to her shores. The Statue of Liberty stands as a symbol of freedom inscribed with these words: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breath free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these the homeless, tempest-tossed to me." This invitation has been answered by millions around the world seeking protection, yet we are not willing to give the same to our own children. Instead of protecting, we kill the defenseless. Instead of opening our gates, we bar the unborn's path to freedom. Instead of illuminating the harbor, we deny our children the sight of light. The most weak and vulnerable among us are not safe within our borders.
In denial of His gifts of prosperity and peace, our country is destroying the very blessings which it should receive and consecrate to God as His possession for His glory. We have taken the unprecedented convenience and comfort of our time, benefits of the wealth we have received from God, and enshrined them as gods. Are these the deities that drove our fathers to desolate shores? No, these alien gods tell us to forsake the spiritual heritage of our country, deny liberty to our citizens, and systematically destroy our heritage from Him. We have eaten the fat of the land and now reject the Hand that has fed us. Our new gods demand blood sacrifice, and in the manner of the pagan empires that have preceded us in Western Civilization, we now unabashedly put our children on the altar. Taking the gifts of peace and prosperity, we reject the Giver. Without repentance, we cannot and will not go unpunished for the gross insurrection and ingratitude we show by refusing our obligations to the unborn given to us by Him.
As a nation we acknowledge a God in heaven with our rhetoric and our religious facades, yet our deeds expose our hypocrisy. We have betrayed our sacred trust as light-bearers to a dark world and now prefer the shadows to the sun. Instead of harboring the outcast, we ourselves have become the very monsters we desired to flee. Instead of defending the weak among us, we unabashedly kill them, often in the very establishments meant for the preservation of life. Scandalously, all this is done with the wealth that comes from His favor. The world looks on as the Christian nation morally crumbles, and one can only wonder at their thoughts about the God America once claimed to serve. "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden," says Jesus in Matthew's gospel. Unveiled in America's sanction of abortion is the prominent rejection of our mission to the world, and this is most devastating. Our only hope is the acknowledgement of our crime with humility in repentance as a nation with the hope that God, rich in mercy, will be faithful to forgive.

Bedrock of a Culture
American Christian culture is dying. What once was “one nation, under God” has
become a land where the Bible is censored material in schools but pro-homosexual
books are required kindergarten literature, a land where murdering an unborn
baby is legal but chopping down trees is frowned upon, a land where shallow
movie stars and flashy football players are admired more than the soldiers who
give the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. How could this have happened to a
nation so Providentially birthed, a nation founded upon the Word of God?
Clearly, the very cornerstone of Christian society is crumbling. Through a
century-long process of prolonged attack from secular humanism, feminism, and
postmodernism, the most basic social unit, the family, is being destroyed.
Created first of all the social institutions, today the Biblical family is
being trampled by the state, the educational system and sadly, even the church.
As a fledgling nation, America’s governmental and economic systems were built
upon the foundation of Biblical, patriarchal families. Family-based businesses
were the normative estate, with both sons and daughters making meaningful
contributions to the familial livelihood at an early age. Competent,
intelligent, and supportive, wives were as much a part of the family economy as
their husbands, fully capable of running the business if the husband was injured
or absent. Unfortunately, as America changed, so did this way of life.
Government and economics shifted from the family to the individual as the basic
unit of society. Giving women the right to vote only strengthened this mindset,
changing the voting system from one vote per family to one vote per individual.
With the onslaught of vicious feminism, women are now encouraged to equal men
economically and politically: those courageous few who cling to their number one
priorities of supporting their husbands and raising godly children are ridiculed
as unintelligent doormats. After the change in the political and economic
spheres began to cause major strife between married couples, the next target was
obvious: the children.
Perhaps the educational system most clearly illustrates the shift away from
Biblical teaching in America. According to Scripture, it is abundantly evident
that the education of a child is primarily the responsibility of the parents.
Proverbs 4:1-4 says, “Hear, my children, the instruction of a father . . . when
I was my father’s son, tender and the only one in the sight of my mother, he
also taught me.” If Christian parents continue to send their children off to be
indoctrinated by secular, atheistic professors, how can they expect to fulfill
the command of Deuteronomy 6:7, “You shall teach them [the laws of God]
diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house,
when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.” To preserve
intact the hearts of the next generation, parents must take on their God given
responsibility to “train up a child on the way he should go”(Proverbs 22:6).
With the myriad of secular forces attacking the Christian family, how is the
church protecting and promoting a vision for victory? Heartbreakingly, the
majority of mainstream churches are not only failing to defend the Biblical
family, they are actually contributing, albeit sometimes unwittingly, to its
downfall. Much like the problems in the educational system, the problems in the
church stem from the removal of the responsibility of the parents to lead their
children. Age-segregated Sunday schools and youth groups allow fathers to pan
off their role as spiritual heads of their household to others, effectively
freeing them from their God given task of nurturing and guiding their children
in the ways of the Lord. With most, if not all, spiritual activities divorcing
parents from children, it is no surprise that 60 – 80 % of evangelical youth
fall away from the faith by their first year away from home, according to
several researchers. If the Christian society of America is to be salvaged,
pastors and churches must place the mantle of responsibility for the discipiling
of the children back where it belongs: on the shoulders of the fathers.
Assaulted on every side by the state, the education system, and even the church,
the Biblical family is engaged in the battle of the century. Fighting back will
not be easy, but God is faithful and will not allow His people to be tempted
beyond what they can bear. To win this cultural war the church must build up
fathers in their role as leaders of their homes, encourage wives to be
submissive helpmeets, and teach children to honor and respect their parents.
Without godly families, there is no godly culture. Just as a beautiful
building cannot stand without a sturdy foundation, so America’s Christian
culture cannot continue without the basis of solid Biblical families.

One of the primary reasons people foolishly spend money is because of an incessant little voice inside saying, "I need that, I need that." What is greed? It is that inner thirst to possess things in vain, hoping that we will find happiness. François de la Rochefoucauld from the seventeenth century, hits the point about greed right in the bull's eye, "A shrewd man has to arrange his interests in order of importance and deal with them one by one; but often our greed upsets this order and makes us run after so many things at once that through over-anxiety to obtain the trivial, we miss the most important."People are never content, always wanting more than they need. Everyone is always wanting more than their neighbor. But that gets them nowhere; many times they end up bankrupt. In August of 2008 almost 4500 people filed for bankruptcy every day!. The little voice of greed does not get you anywhere in life, it only makes you want more.
Another reason people foolishly spend their money is because they are willing to enjoy something now and pay for it later- the "credit card" mentality. They are always borrowing money, knowing that they cannot pay it off. An anonymous person once said, "Modern man drives a mortgaged car over a bond-financed highway on credit-card gas". Another way this has been said is: "They buy what they don't need, with money they don't have, to impress people they don't even like." The person who desires instant gratification will never be happy, he will only become caught up in more and more financial problems and sin.
One of the main reasons people spend their money foolishly is that they confuse their needs and wants. They think that if they finally get what they want they will be content. People deceive themselves, thinking that they need what they want. The Bible speaks directly to this in 1Timothy 6:8 which says, "And having food and raiment let us be there with content."(NKJ) They think that they have to have it now, or they cannot live without it. These people look at life in two ways, "There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it."The needs of people are very simple, but they like putting a façade on their wants and make it a need. The problem with people confusing their needs and wants is that their wants always become needs and they can never be satisfied.
The problem with people always spending their money unwisely is that they are trying to buy worldly happiness, which is utterly impossible. In 2006 the bankruptcy rate at the end of the year was 617,660. In 2007 it was 850,912, at the end of the year 2008, the nation is supposed reach 1.1 million bankruptcies. The only way to happiness is by the Lord Jesus Christ. If people sought happiness through Christ they would find out that they do not need everything. So, will money bring happiness? No. In the end it will only lead to destruction.

America has many nascent social problems,
such as crime, education, and illegal immigration. One major social problem in
America is the disintegration of the family. Thankfully America was started by
men who held family life in high esteem, but our society has lost what the
fathers of our country valued so much. The American family has lost its
foundation and is steadily disintegrating. What problems are seen when looking
at the family today? There is no commitment, relationships are tenuous, and
there is little character development. These foundational problems must be
addressed if the American family is to survive.
A lack of true commitment is eroding the foundation of the American family.
Commitment is following through with a promise no matter how bad or good
circumstances get. American families are being destroyed by divorce. Because
there is no commitment, over 60% of marriages end in divorce each year.
Statistics show that in a 10 year time period, more than 25% of mothers were
raising a family singly and more than 62% more fathers were raising a family
singly. Over time, divorce has become more acceptable in the American culture.
Furthermore, people are not finding it necessary to commit to marriage before
having children. Recently, one third of all babies born in the USA were to
unmarried women. "In essence, the old taboos against divorce and cohabitation
are disappearing, and the culture is abandoning its commitment to lifelong
marriage." (James Dobson, Focus On the Family) If these issues of commitment are
not resolved, it will continue to weaken the foundation of America.
In the American family, there is little pursuit of personal relationships. A
personal relationship involves mutual love and a desire to know more about the
other person, which takes extended time. In the average family, around 6 hours
and 47 minutes is spent each day watching TV, and also 66% of the American
population watches TV when eating dinner. How is there any time to grow in
personal relationships? It takes time and effort to achieve a personal
relationship, but it is not going to happen by watching TV. Furthermore, the
average minutes per week that a parent spends with their children in meaningful
conversation is a total of 4 minutes! Relationships are built by listening to
people's struggles and encouraging them through hard times and rejoicing with
them in good times. Because parents are not spending time with each other and
their kids, strong relationships will never be built. Families have to spend
more time pursuing personal relationships if the foundations of America are to
stay strong.
There is little character development in American families. Character is how you
deal with things and the traits people know you by. The downfall of character
development in families today is because parents do not have character
themselves, thus they do not value it. If the parents of the kids themselves do
not have character, where do kids pick it up from? Sadly, it comes from the
media, TV, and movies. Most movies now are corrupt and have no life
implications. Kids need to see their parents deal correctly with real life
situations and learn from spending personal time with them. In America this is
not happening; children are not taught you need to be honorable on your taxes,
it is wrong to steal from an employer, and you always have to tell the truth. If
the development of character in American families is not strong, who will be the
next leaders?
The American family has lost its foundation and is steadily disintegrating.
There is no commitment, relationships are tenuous, and there is little character
development in the American family. Is there still hope for American families?
Yes; it ultimately starts with a realization that God is in control. America
needs to realize that these three issues are ultimately sin, and that we need to
accept the responsibilities God has given us in our family. If America does not
realize that God is the only solution for this social problem, the foundations
that our forefathers built will disintegrate and America will be no more.

Abortion is an issue to American society because it is the killing of innocent human beings. Abortions have been happening since the first civilization, Egypt but it only became legal in America in 1973. As a society we must embrace a culture of life or a culture of death. Two ancient societies Rome and Greece accepted abortion then infanticide after that euthanasia. Is America going to walk down the same path to legal murder? The morality of a society is in terrible decline when it embraces a culture of death.
Abortion itself is a truly barbaric procedure. The suction-aspiration method tears the babies body apart then sucks it all into a bottle. The dilatation and curettage technique is where a knife in the form of a loop is used to cut the baby to pieces and then those bits is scraped into a basin. The dilatation and evacuation extremity uses an instrument that is like pliers to grab, hold, and tear off a limb. This goes on until they reach the head where the doctor crushes it along with the spine. The nurse then assembles it all together to make sure nothing is missing. Partial birth abortion, is where the brain of the child is sucked out by a machine for that the head collapses to make it easier to pull out.
Abortion is the murdering of innocents despite the fact that the Supreme court made it okay. Thirty-five years ago you would have gone to jail if you were involved with an abortion. But in 1973 that changed. The Supreme court decided it was not against the constitution to have an abortion and it became a woman’s right to kill her child if she did not want it. They could have ruled that if the mother was unable to care for her baby it would be placed in an adoption program. Instead they said that murder was acceptable since the baby is a “part” of a woman’s body. If the fetus is a part of the mothers body then she would feel the pain of having a knife tear a part of her body apart. It is a scientific fact that human life starts at conception. Did you know that you can hear a baby's heartbeat at 21 days? A human can not have two hearts. One of the ten commandments is “thou shall not kill”, yet, 3700 babies are killed each day because abortion is legal. Anatomy, lies, and the legal system have combined to make America a self centered country.
Abortion, was it the right thing to do? Women who have abortions are 2 times more likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric treatment in the first 90 days. After the abortion many will feel guilt, hopelessness, despair, anguish, bitterness, empty, anger, helplessness, and unworthiness. They suffer nightmares, hysterical outbursts, uncontrollable weeping, and suicidal feelings. Some symptoms of depression empty mood, excessive crying, worthlessness, helplessness, and hopelessness. Most woman will rid themselves of their child because of inconvenience but 71% said their life did not improve. Sixty percent said it made life worse. "Colleen" said "When I broke down in front of them, saying that I thought it was wrong to do this, they told me they would kick me out of the house if I didn't have the abortion." (the they is the parents)...."In the end, the abortion did not "solve all my problems" as everyone had promised. My parents still kicked me out. I had to quit school." Judith Evans: "I felt cheated, betrayed, and manipulated. I wasn't told that after having an abortion an unbelievable self-hatred would consume me and lead to distrust, suspicion, and the utter inability to care about myself, or others--including my four children." All those emotions to experience some linked with depression because of the abortion and the higher percent still said abortion made life worse.
Abortion is an issue to America's society. A stunning 1.3 million babies are aborted per year in America, per day 3700. Abortion is barbaric. "Nancy Anders" asked her doctor afterwards "was it a boy or girl":doctor "I can't tell. Its in pieces." Was abortion the right thing to do? 94% of women who had abortion said they regretted the abortion. When you have an abortion its with the idea that you are in control, yet only 3% said they felt like they were in control. Women in America have expelled 47 million lives since abortion was made legal. An aborted child could've been the person who finds the cure for cancer. Former abortionist Bernard Nathanson
Abortion is a sinking pit that will pull America down. How can this be a civilized nation when something as disgusting as abortion is going on? says "In the tiny, almost invisible thirty two cell blastocyst--in that one gram or so of tissue--there is a physical potential and moral destiny unparalleled in our universe. Statistics say that the number one reason for abortions was inconvenience. All those babies are dead because they were inconvenient. Those 1.3 million children who died last year could’ve been adopted.
