About the Tutor
My name is Matthew Turnbull and I am the tutor for Alexandria Tutorials. Born in 1965 in Iowa, and living for several years in Chicago, we moved to Utah when my parents decided to leave the corporate world for the glories of the West. My favorite pastime for the years between the ages of five and ten was hiking in the sandstone canyons of the Southeastern Utah desert. Selling the newspaper my parents ran in Utah, we moved then to Leavenworth, Washington, where I completed my schooling. Through the influence of several friends, God opened my eyes and gave me a new life just a few weeks before I entered college.
In 1987, I graduated from Linfield College in Oregon with a B.A. in Psychology and minors in both Art and Music. For the next four years I worked with college students at Washington State University and the University of Idaho as a staff member with Campus Crusade for Christ. In 1991, I returned to school at Washington State and earned a B. A. in English and a teaching certificate. Between 1994 and 1999 I was discipling and teaching junior high, senior high and college students as an associate pastor at a local church in Leavenworth. For the following three years I served as the high school English and History teacher at Upper Valley Christian School which is a K-12 school associated with the church. Since 2002, I have been working part-time as a teaching elder (see Writings of the Tutor) at our fellowship--Cornerstone Bible Church--and spend the rest of my working hours teaching homeschooled students locally and online.
It is daily evidence of God's mercy and kindness to me that I am married to an excellent woman named Christie and have five beautiful daughters and an infant son (pictures).
Obviously the biggest event in my personal history is the commencement of my relationship with Christ. In addition to giving me mercy and hope and new life, God also graciously gave me a desire to learn (a change from my earlier habits). Throughout my years in ministry and teaching, the emphasis in training students has focused on a clear apprehension of the Word of God and a willingness to proclaim-- as well as reasonably defend-- the faith. Growth in Christ means that we will constantly be learning more about Him, about what He has spoken, and about how to articulate that to our culture.

Statement of Faith
As it has served as an expression of the essentials for the body of Christ throughout the centuries, and in total unity with its statement, we (that would be the tutor), at Alexandria Tutorials, uphold that which is articulated in the Apostle's Creed . . .
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic [universal] church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
